Principia College currently offers a B.S. degree in Physics, as well as a Physics minor. The degree requirements for each are summarized below. See here for a full description of each course.
Note: While we update this page on a regular basis in order to keep this information current, please refer to the official Principia College Catalog for course planning purposes.
B.S. Major in Physics
A B.S. degree in Physics requires the following coursework:
- Introductory courses: PHYS 201, PHYS 202, PHYS 203, PHYS 204 (15 SH)
- Advanced Lab: PHYS 283 (4 SH)
- Upper-division core: PHYS 301, PHYS 303, PHYS 305, PHYS 307 (12 SH)
- Two electives from the following list: CHEM 311, PHYS 304, PHYS 306, PHYS 351, PHYS 352 (6 SH)
- Courses outside the department: CHEM 131, MATH 181, MATH 182, MATH 273, MATH 283, MATH 355, MATH 380 (4 SH in CHEM, 23 SH in MATH)
- Independent Research Project: PHYS 401 (3 SH)
A total of 67 SH are required, including 40 SH in Physics, 23 SH in Math, and 4 SH in Chemistry.
Physics Minor
The minor in Physics requires the following courses:
- Introductory sequence: PHYS 201, PHYS 202, PHYS 203, PHYS 204 (13 SH)
- Advanced Lab: PHYS 283 (4 SH)
- One upper-level course numbered 301 or higher (3 SH)
A total of 22 SH are required. However, note that the calculus sequence up through Multivariable Calculus (MATH 283) is a prerequisite for most upper-level Physics courses.
